The term idiomatic refers to everything what is characteristic of a particular language. Idioms, phrases, idioms.
That which is characteristic or typical of a language
A expression idiomatic is a sequence of words whose meaning does not turn out to be compositional, that is, the reference of the expression does not come from its components but rather comes from uses and traditions own of the geographical place in which it is expressed.
Applications and examples
For example, if in Argentina we say: yesterday I screwed up telling my cousin that we would celebrate her birthday, because it was a surprise party, most likely we all understand what is meant, that a mistake was made, a mistake, because I screwed up is a common idiomatic expression in Argentina, However, it may happen that in some other Spanish-speaking place such a phrase is not fully understood and therefore if a foreigner hears it, they will not understand that they are talking.
So, an idiomatic expression will always mean en bloc, never isolated and will admit both a literal and a figurative interpretation, although the one that stands out is the figurative one.
Other examples of idiomatic expressions: Laura is about to kick the bucket (she is about to die); I can't stand you teasing me, please be serious to me (tease); she put me in a nutshell and I didn't even realize it (cheat).
It should be noted that those who are learning a language foreigner, first they will learn the formal aspects of it and then they will also have to learn This other part of the vocabulary, more informal, but which is also part of the language they are learning and which will allow them to function naturally and without problems at the time of the communication everyday.
Because inevitably languages are formed by that formal part of the language but also by the informal one, which is normally used on the social plane.
So when, for example, a student travels to another country to study the language spoken there, he will go to university to learn it from agreeable way, but he will also learn the B side of it, from his classmates, in those moments in which they interact outside the school, or when they are not under the formal framework of language teaching, because of course, many of those colloquial expressions that are common and hyper popular are frowned upon by masters of language.
The importance of language for communication and the most widely spoken languages in the world
The language or language is the basic and most important tool that human beings have to communicate orally and in writing. Through it we can express ourselves and understand each other, with the interlocutor who speaks precisely our same language.
Otherwise, it will be difficult to understand each other, and we will have to do it by signs or by learning the other's language, a question that of course is not so fast or instantaneous.
A language is not learned from one day to the next but requires time since there are grammatical rules, verb modes to learn and they are not so simple matters.
Of course there are people who have a natural tendency that makes them learn other languages quickly, but not all people.
The language is made up of a series of letters and symbols that are learned and adopted in a conventional way by all individuals belonging to a culture.
The most widely spoken languages as a consequence of the number of speakers they have are Chinese, which is the most widely spoken in the world, if we take into account that China is the nation with more population world, followed by English, considered as a universal language because it is spoken as a second language almost everywhere on the planet, in third place Spanish appears, with more and more force, and they are followed by Italian, French, German ...
