Furniture is understood to be any element that is thought, designed and built in order to be used in the space of a home or edification with different uses according to its shape or purpose. One of the basic characteristics when defining what a piece of furniture is is, precisely, the fact that It is a movable object that can be moved from one place to another, so other objects related to the building and the decoration cannot be considered furniture (for example, windows, doors, ceilings, floors, walls and others).
The furniture has been created by the human being as a basic element to possess in certain spaces in order to allow greater comfort and utility. In this sense, we can say that objects such as benches, chairs, tables and beds must have been the first Furniture to be built by man since they fulfill essential functions within a home: allow the feeding and the rest of the human being. Then, other pieces of furniture of minor importance but still interesting appear such as the desk, the
library, bedside tables, cabinets, wardrobes and others, each fulfilling its specific function. It was not until the 17th - 18th centuries that furniture went from being something merely utilitarian to also become (and in many cases especially) a set of decorative elements. With the Rococo, the art applied to design and construction of luxury furniture for individuals with a large monetary flow, creating various styles and models for each type of furniture. This notion of furniture as something decorative as well as useful continues to this day: today each type of furniture, each furniture style and each design has the objective of creating different and unique spaces for each bedroom.
Normally, the furniture should be made of strong and durable materials in order to guarantee its owner a long time of use. In this sense, wood and the metal have traditionally been the two basic materials for the construction of furniture, although the second half of the 20th century also allowed the work with other elements such as plastic, resin, cardboard, fabrics and others.
