Verbs in the First Person
Spanish Classes / / July 04, 2021
Verbs in the first person are those that are conjugated for the first person grammar; This category tells us who the participants are within the communicative act.
In particular, the first person is one in which the issuer is the same subject of the action. Who performs the action of the verb is the issuer of the sentence or the statement. For example:
- "I bought some chocolates": the verb I bought It is in the first person since the same issuer is the one who performs the action of
- "We will be good friends": the verb we will be is in the first person, the issuer is the one who performs the action (to be); in this case, the issuer is a collective subject (U.S).
As can be seen in the examples, the grammatical person is expressed in the form of the verb; this can modify its form to express different people: I bought, bought, we bought, bought, bought... This is called verbal flexion: the verb flexes, changes its form, to imply different meanings (in addition to the person, it indicates the mode, the time and the number). When the verb is flexed, what changes is the ending placed after the stem.
Forms of the first person grammar:
The first person grammar can be of two forms according to its number: the subject of speech can be an individual entity or, well, group or plural.
1. First person of singular: the issuer is an individual subject (me). For example:
- "Me said the truth". The verb said It is conjugated for the first person singular: it refers to only one subject (I).
- “I will wait until they call me ”. The verb i will wait It is conjugated for the first person singular in the future tense: it refers to an action that a single individual (I) will perform.
- “I cook some baked potatoes ”. The verb i cook It is conjugated for the first person singular in the present: it is an action carried out by a single individual (I).
2. First person plural: the issuer is a plural subject, that is, he is more than one individual (we, we): subject expresses the action speaking for himself and for others who are also involved in the verbal action.
