Until a few years ago there was no legislation in relation to coexistence in the home between people who wanted to share their lives and who were not a couple and were not part of a family. In Mexico, specifically in the Federal District, a decreelaw of coexistence society.
Based on this law, a legal framework is established so that two people can establish a mutual aid pact related to the circumstances of life together.
Requirements that cohabitants must meet
Regardless of their sex, two people can form a partnership within the home if they meet the following requirements: that they are of legal age, that both have full legal capacity, that the two express their explicit will to help each other and that the agreed agreement is formally registered in writing in the administrative body correspondent.
The legal act that accompanies the coexistence society has the signature of the interested parties and the witnesses.
In the development of the law, it is also specified that people who are united in marriage, those who form a free union and blood relatives.
Purpose of the law
Once the members of the coexistence society have registered their union, both agree to live together with the purpose of maintaining permanent help on various matters, such as feeding or the enjoyment of shared property. Likewise, those who register in a coexistence society can agree on all those conditions or rules that they consider appropriate to regulate their life together.
In the development of the law, all those circumstances that may occur within the framework of coexistence are specified, such as the death of one of the members, the end of the coexistence by one of the parties or a possible alimony if the company is dissolves.
In short, the law of coexistence society is conceived for those people who want to form a home and engage in a life Proyect in common.
Criticism of the regulations
For some it is a totally unnecessary law, since two people can freely agree on a type of coexistence without having to formalize their agreement. For others, the union of a coexistence society is, in some way, an attack on the traditional family model.
Those who censure the law argue that the family is based on love between the spouses, while the form of coexistence is based on some type of shared interest.
