The direct object is the part of speech that complements the predicate and indicates on what or who the subject exercises the action of the verb.
Sentences are composed of a subject, whose nucleus is the noun (animal, person or thing), and a predicate in which its nucleus, which is the verb, expresses what the subject does. The action expressed by the core of the predicate, by the verb, has various complements that serve to clarify and complete the idea of action carried out by the subject. One of these complements is the direct object, which serves to indicate on what or on whom the action carried out by the subject falls.
For example, in the following sentence:
- José composes the car.
The subject: José, performs an action: composes, The action that José performs, falls on an object: The car. In this sentence the direct object is "the car".
In this other sentence:
- The teacher teaches mathematics and physics.
The subject is "the teacher", the action he performs is "teaches", the direct object, that is, on which the action falls, is "mathematics and physics".
How to identify the direct object?
To identify the direct object, this part of the predicate together with the action of the verb, you must answer the questions What? or To who?:
- José composes the car: What does José compose? Car.
- Estela bathes the children: Who does Estela bathe? To the kids.
Another way to identify the direct object is that we can replace it with the pronouns lo, los, la, las:
- José composes the car - José it composes.
- The teacher teaches mathematics and physics - The teacher the teaches.
- Estela bathes the children - Estela the bathes.
