It comes from Latin, specifically from tabernaculum, and originally meant tent. In this sense, in ancient times merchants sold their products in this type of construction and for this reason the word tavern is a establishment intended for the sale of a product, usually drinks and food. However, the primitive sense of the term was adapted to the biblical terminology and a tabernacle became the place destined to guard the hosts, so that tabernacle and tabernacle are synonymous words.
In Jewish tradition
In the Jewish religion, the so-called Feast of Tabernacles or Harvest Festival is celebrated (in Hebrew it is known as sukkot). The purpose of this solemn celebration is consolidate the relationship between man and his Creator. The festival takes place in fall when the fruit of the ground has been gathered. During the seven days that the sukkot lasts, the faithful must visit tabernacles or huts that are located located outside the urban nucleus (the seven days of celebration symbolize the seven years that the Israelites spent in the desert Of Egipt).
The Feast of Tabernacles or Sukkot is, along with the Jewish Passover or Pesach, Yom Kippur and Shavuot, one of the most representative of Judaism.
In the catholic religion
The Blessed Sacrament must be kept in a special place within the temple and that place is the tabernacle. In the first centuries of Christianity it was a simple casket inside a closet, but with the passage of time the The custody of the Blessed Sacrament was acquiring more importance and the tabernacle was moved to the premises of the sacristy.
The location of the tabernacle or tabernacle is not an arbitrary question, since it is part of the liturgical norms contained in the Right Canonical.
The word tavern and tabernacle have the same etymological origin
A tavern is an establishment where drinks are normally sold and the person who manages this type of premises is a tavern keeper. This denomination is still used today and some taverns are very popular in Spain and Latin America. The funny thing is that the term was already used in the ancient world, specifically in the civilization Egyptian and Roman and with the passage of time this word acquired its religious significance in Judaism and the Catholicism.
