In the last months of 2017, a campaign began in the United States to denounce the sexual harassment and abuse suffered by women in show business. Like many other phenomena, this one began in the context of social networks with a hashtag accompanied by a suggestive title, #Metoo (in Spanish, Me too).
The first man charged was the famous producer of movie theater Harvey Weinstein, who was denounced by several women. The first consequence of such accusations was the expulsion of the producer as a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Since the campaign began, the list of famous men accused has not stopped growing.
A viral phenomenon with international projection
After the public denunciation of Harvey Weinstein, other actresses and models from the United States and other countries have joined the movement. In a very short time, the hashtag against sexual abuse has become a true viral phenomenon. In fact, many women have supported this campaign not because they have been victims of sexual harassment, but because they consider it their
obligationmoral support the victims. In short, women from all corners of the planet have said a resounding enough to sexual harassment.
#Metoo is much more than a series of complaints against sexual abuse suffered by women in Hollywood
First, the campaign highlights the "law of silence "that prevailed in Hollywood for many years. There were suspicions and indications that sexual harassment of actresses was a widespread reality, but no one dared to denounce it publicly by disclosing the abusers with their names and surnames.
#Metoo is a movement for the dignity of women. In other words, no woman and no man should tolerate the normalization of sexual harassment as a "tradition"ancestral that is part of the entertainment world.
Sexual relationships that are maintained under threats or coercion are associated with illegal conduct and, therefore, should be reported in court.
This campaign reminds us of a historical and sociological reality: for centuries women have not been able to express normally their rejection against the different forms of sexual harassment. This movement of denunciation represents an act of rebellion against the attitude macho of many men who, abusing their power, turn women into sexual objects.
Also, a revolutionary component is observed. Women from all over the world, along with the solidarity of some men feel that it is necessary to end impunity for sexual harassers.
There are also voices against
Not all women share the same point of view on this phenomenon. French actress Catherine Denueve and a hundred women sent a letter to the Newspaper Le Monde to express his disagreement.
There are several arguments that have been used to discredit the campaign. It is affirmed that the woman presents herself as the eternal victim subjected to men. The letter also recalls that sexuality involves a dose of harassment and denying this reality is a sign of a puritanical and hypocritical attitude.
Finally, the Metoo campaign is claimed to be a form of feminism based on hatred of men and one's own sexuality.
