Adversative is an expression that in grammar refers to the adversative conjunctions, and adversative sentences or phrases, which owe their sense of opposition or adverse, thanks to conjunctions, which are those that change or define the meaning of a phrase or sentence.
The adversative conjunctions, are the conjunctions that express an adverse sense, contrast or an opposition, in a phrase or sentence.
In a phrase or sentence, the adversative conjunction is the one that denotes an opposition, contrast, or difference in the sense of the same, and the conjunction is the nexus of comparison. If an adversative conjunction of a single word is used in the sentence or phrase, the separation is made with a comma (",") before the conjunction. As in the next sentence
In phrases or sentences in which an adversative conjunction of two or more words is used, before the conjunction is put a semicolon (";") and immediately after the conjunction a comma, separating the conjunction from the rest of the sentence. As an example this case:
I bought a lot of sodas for the party; however, they were not enough.
The adversative conjunctions are:
- But.
- However.
- Even if.
- More.
- Otherwise.
- However.
- Nevertheless.
- Unlike.
- The comma is also used (“,”) or semicolon (“;”) without writing the nexus, giving adverse or oppositional meaning between the sentences of the sentence.
Examples of adversative conjunctions:
- it's not hot, otherwise cold. (where otherwise, totally changes the meaning of the first part of the sentence, upsetting the meaning in the opposite way).
- I wanted to go with you but better not. (Where but, is the adversative conjunction that changes the meaning of the sentence).
- I give you permission to go to the party; Nevertheless, I don't want you to drink (Where however, it is the adversative conjunction of the sentence, with the sense of opposition).
- Eat, or you will starve (In this sentence comma, is the nexus that makes the adversative change)
- The enemy knights were besieging the castle, however they gave up, because the plague weakened their hosts. (where However, it is the adversative conjunction that differentiates the sentence).
- We had the money to buy it more she was gone when we got to buy. (Where more, it is the adversative nexus that changes the sentence adversatively).
- the bus was destroyed, However there were no deaths. (In this sentence However is the adversative nexus of prayer)
- We all ran outside when the shaking started; except you, who stayed seated. (Where the adversative change of opposition is marked by (“;”) semicolon).
- Francisca studied and passed the exam; Unlike, Josefa did not want to study and failed the exam. (in this sentence on the contrary, it is the adversative conjunction)
More examples of adversative conjunctions:
- All students in the classroom passed; except you.
- I already had breakfast, but I'm still hungry
- She fell off the stairs Nevertheless no damage was done.
- We were defeated However, there is still hope of winning.
- I work hard, even if that doesn't seem to matter to him.
- She loves me, otherwise Why does she bother scolding me so much?
- She got upset with me, even though I gave him the birthday present.
- You can see from the way she yells that she doesn't love you; Unlike, if she didn't love me she wouldn't scold me so much.
