Example of Different Forms of Coordination

    Spanish Classes   /   by admin   /   July 04, 2021

On the previous page it was seen how compound sentences are formed with two simple sentences that are joined by means of a conjunction (nexus). In this way, coordination can be copulative, disjunctive or adversative, depending on the kind of conjunction that unites them, namely:

    Copulatives: and (e), nor.
    Adversative: but, more, although, etc.
    Tradeoffs: or (u).

The copulative conjunctions and, and join affirmative sentences.

    For example:

    1. He finished the job and collected his money.
    2. SofĂa declaimed two poems, and Ismael played the piano.

The conjunction neither join negative sentences:

    1. "I neither remove, nor do I put a king."
    2. I neither love you nor hate you.

Adverse conjunctions but, more, although, they usually link a negative sentence to an affirmative

    For example:

    1. He wanted to help him, but couldn't.
    2. "Many men die in wars, but not those guilty of them."
    3. I will make them obey, even if they get upset.

    The trade-offs indicate alternative:

    1. Either you study or you work.
    2. Let Ernesto or Octavio come, it doesn't matter.

Continuatives, meanwhile, express the continuation of an idea.

    For example:

    1. The machine costs a lot, so you will say if it is bought.
    2. I study what is necessary in order to pass the course.
