The term is an English acronym in which two words are combined, Britain to refer to Great Britain and Exit, which means exit. In this way, by joining the two, the word BREXIT is created, which refers to the departure of Great Britain from the European Union.
On June 23, 2016, British citizens were summoned to referendum to decide if they wanted to remain part of the European Union or if, on the contrary, they chose to leave it. Behind the working day voting, the British decided to leave the European Union (the victory of NO occurred by 51.9%).
The political and social debate for and against BREXIT before the referendum
Britain has been a part of the European Union for more than four decades. However, their situation presented some peculiarities: they kept the pound as their currency and did not join the euro and there was a part of society that did not value the currency positively. membership to the EU.
There are several reasons that Eurosceptics alleged and allege to disassociate themselves from the European framework:
1) a reversal of the sovereignty British nationality in favor of Europe and anti-European sentiment in some sectors of society,
2) a rejection of European immigration policies and
3) a weakening of the welfare state as a consequence of the high number of population immigrant who must be cared for.
The supporters of staying in Europe had and have their arguments:
1) Britain is stronger within Europe than it is outside,
2) going outside the European framework will produce economic instability and financial,
3) the EU is the main trading partner of the British and leaving Europe implies a change of status with unpredictable consequences.
Consequences after the referendum
The result of the vote does not imply that Great Britain is going to leave the EU immediately, since for two years it is necessary to negotiate what the specific conditions of the disconnection are.
However, analysts indicate that the effects may be as follows: a decline in Britain's GDP, a devaluation of the pound (which has already occurred), a civil society divided, a possible contagion effect on other European nations (an example of this circumstance has already been given among the Scots, who demand a second referendum, since the majority decided stay). All these consequences create a framework of uncertainty among the British and in the whole of Europe. The authentic and definitive repercussions of BREXIT will be manifest in the next years.
