The word eolionimia is formed by the combination of two terms, aeolus and nimia. As is known, Aeolus was the God of the Winds in Greek mythology. The suffix nimia means name. Thus, eolionymy is the set of names that are used to mention the different types of winds. His force provides relevant information to sailors, meteorologists, farmers or pilots.
Aeolus blows are capable of creating Energy and, at the same time, cause devastating destruction.
The importance of the wind is very present in everyday language
In fact, if things go well for us, we say that the wind is in our favor and if things go bad we have to fight against the odds.
The wind is a phenomenon of nature that has disturbed the human being since the most remote times. The intensity and strength of each wind has a different meaning and signifier in each territory.
The names of the winds in Spain, Argentina and Chile
If we focus on the geography Spanish, the most popular winds are ábrego, cerzo, galerna, levante, poniente, terral and tramontana, among many others. Each of them has some singularity, either by its origin, its intensity or its
temperature. In Argentina the cold and dry wind that occurs in La Pampa and is known as pampero is famous. The sudestada, the zonda, the north, the cudo or the kóshkil are also very popular winds.
In Chile the east wind is known as puelche, a word that comes from the language spoken by the Mapuches. The puelche is equivalent to the zonda in Argentina or the ábrego in Spain. However, in each territory of the Chilean geography the same wind has a different name, such as raco, terral or puihua.
Wind-related phenomena and the measurement of its intensity
In addition to the different names that each wind receives, it must be remembered that this phenomenon has many other names. If its strength is low it is called a breeze, if it is intense gale or storm and if it is accompanied by heavy rains it is called a hurricane.
The exact measurement of the intensity of the wind is extremely important for the study of meteorological phenomena. The scale Beaufort is the tool that allows you to measure your velocity. This scale began to be used in France at the beginning of the 19th century, since until then there was no objective way to assess the strength of the wind.
