Sometimes acronyms have more than one meaning, as they correspond to organisms different. This is what happens with the acronym ESMA. On the one hand, they refer to a European Union body, specifically European Security and Markets Authorithy, whose translation would be authority European securities and markets. On the other hand, it is an Argentine organization, specifically, the School of Mechanics of the Navy.
The role of ESMA in the European Union
Is institution Its main function is to regulate the securities markets within the framework of the European Union. Among its attributions we can highlight the following: supervision credit rating agencies, the control of investment funds, the protection of investors, the elaboration of regulations for financial control, etc.
In short, this body is in charge of establishing rules and controls in everything related to the stock market. As is logical, the activities of ESMA are related to those organizations dedicated to the same tasks in the different countries of the European Union.
In the Argentine context
In the city of Buenos, this school for NCOs of the Navy operated between 1924 and 1998. Its fame is not due to the military activities that were carried out in this center, but it became sadly known because during the dictatorship The Argentine military used the ESMA facilities as an illegal detention center. Torture and all kinds of harassment were carried out in its premises against those who opposed the military dictatorship.
In Argentina, the mention of ESMA is associated with a black stage in its recent history. Over the years, the ESMA has become a museum dedicated to preserving the memory history of the Argentine people.
Basically, the headquarters of the organization has had three stages over time: a school dedicated to training members of the army, a repressive center and finally a museum dedicated to the reconciliation of the Argentines
The atrocities that were committed at the ESMA facilities are part of the repression that was imposed in Argentina between 1976 and 1983 during the different military regimes. This implies that there was terrorism status during the mentioned period.
Originally, the terrorist actions promoted by the military governments had the purpose of combat two revolutionary guerrilla groups: the People's Revolutionary Army and the Montoneros. The repressive apparatus of the state had more than three hundred clandestine centers throughout the country and one of them was precisely the school for the navy's non-commissioned officers.
