The inauguration ceremony for certain relevant political positions is known as the investiture. Therefore, it is a formal act by which a person, for example the president of a nation, she is appointed to a position. It must be remembered that the verb invest means, precisely, to grant or grant a person a representation of great social relevance.
The investiture process of the president of government in Spain it is included in the Constitution
After the elections to elect the representatives of the people, the King meets with the leaders politicians who have been elected by the polls and proposes a candidate for the office of president of government.
The proposed candidate addresses all the deputies of Congress and sets out his political program and, subsequently, requests the support of the chamber. After this request, the deputies vote and in this way express their support or their rejection of the investiture of the candidate for president. If the candidate to occupy the presidency of the government is supported in a majority way by the deputies, the candidate is invested as president of the nation. In the event that an absolute majority is not achieved, a new vote is held 48 hours later and if there is not enough support it will be necessary to call a new election.
The medieval origin of the investiture
The remote origin of this tradition is in the Roman Law, specifically in the legal act by which the transfer of a property to its rightful owner was carried out. In the Middle Ages This legal form was used in the taking of possession of a fief by its owner (the feudal lord). Similarly, when kings were proclaimed as the highest authority of a kingdom an investiture ceremony was held.
The act of investiture understood as a formal ceremony was also performed when an individual was appointed knight or when a vassal swore allegiance to the feudal lord.
The Endowment Concept Among Mormons
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormon church) also incorporates the concept of endowment. Thus, for the members of this religious current, the investiture ceremony consists of a ritual in which a church leader receives a divine gift granted by the intervention Holy Spirit.
