Considered by specialists as a artwork, the tapestry can be described as a fabric made with much precision since it is not only a union of yarns but specific designs can be represented on the surface, in many cases figurative and representative of scenes, characters or messages. The tapestry is one of the forms of art older if we take into account that the fabric has been invented by the human being already in prehistoric times. In the particular case of the tapestry we must add a question or a side artistic to the simple fact of knitting something with the aim of sheltering or being used as a fabric to protect different elements.
Tapestries have long been surfaces onto which artists from different eras have poured their art. This has to do directly with the fact that through these unique pieces a person or a institution how the Church could demonstrate its power, its wealth, etc. Usually, the most delicate tapestries used to be made with gold threads, so if we add to all the detailed and handmade work the
quality of the raw material, we obtain as a result a very exclusive and expensive product.Tapestries were especially important in the Middle Ages, since the walls of the castles and the great residences were covered with them to avoid that the rooms were so cold. Remind us here that the tapestry is usually of a grammage and thickness than most fabrics, which is why it was the perfect element to fulfill this function. Eventually, scenes of daily life, battles, heroes, nature, etc. began to be represented on these heavy fabrics. In many cases, they also served as a decorative element per se, which means that they gained a space and a richness that left functionality aside a bit in pursuit of the style artistic or aesthetic.
In some cases, the tapestries also served as the surface on which to tell stories, as is the case with the famous Bayeux Tapestry. This French tapestry is recognized worldwide for its great horizontal extension in which the battle of Hastings that faced in the year 1066 between England and France is told.
