A murga is an eminently popular musical group that entertains some parties, especially the celebration Of the carnival. During the carnival, the murgas sing songs with a festive spirit and, above all, with a satirical intention. The letters and the tone of the songs have the purpose to entertain viewers and provide a lighthearted and fun view of reality.
The murgas usually perform in tablados in humble neighborhoods or directly in the streets. What gender musical murga should be understood as the fusion of different genres, such as the cuplé, the zarzuela or the pasodoble. Although the musical performances are based on the scathing criticism of the songs, it should not be forgotten that instruments such as the snare, the cymbal, the guitar or the kick drum are also used.
Its historical origin
Most scholars of this carnival musical phenomenon affirm that its origin must be located in the town Spanish from Cádiz at the beginning of the 20th century. According to other versions, its origin could be in Galicia or Uruguay. In any case, the murga is very popular in Cádiz (in this city the groups are known as chirigotas), Uruguay, Mexico, Panama or Argentina.
The murga and the spirit of carnival
During the carnival period, everyday problems are forgotten and people go out to the Street with their costumes with the idea of having fun and having a good time before the arrival of Lent. In this context, the performances of the murgas have a leading role, since they not only enliven the streets, but with their interpretations a social criticism is made, especially of political power and the values conventional society.
The most popular and recognized costumes are those from Cádiz and those from the city of Montevideo. In the carnival of these two cities, official competitions are held between the murgas, in which the jury values the originality of the letters and the dramatization of musical performances.
The expression "give the murga"
In Spanish there is a expression popular that refers to this word, "give the murga". It is used to indicate that someone is annoying or is too pushy. Thus, "don't give me the murga" means don't bother me. This expression is equivalent to others, such as "give the tabarra" or "give the can".
