Animal Couplets

The couplets are metric structures of four verses with a rhyme.

The word couplet, of Latin origin, derives from copulation which means union, bond or link.

The couplets can rhyme between the even lines or between lines 1, 2 and 4 (it is not necessary that all four lines rhyme). On the other hand, the rhyme can be consonant, (the rhyme ending matches both vowels and consonants) or assonant (only the final vowels of the words coincide).

The purpose of the verses is the development of imagination and creativity of both adults and children, as well as being a hobby or daily recreational activity.

In many communities the verses are used as a way of transmitting cultural values or traditions in local festivals. In this sense, the couplet fulfills a function of transmission of a certain culture.

The animal couplets, on the other hand, are used to leave a teaching and tell a short anecdote for children. Some may take the form of fables that give voice or human behavior to animals.
