The subordinate clauses They are a type of coordinated sentences, between which there is a dependency relationship between two sentences. They are composed of two elements: the main sentence and the subordinate sentence or sentences, also called secondary sentences. Both elements form a set in which the complete meaning of the sentence depends on the relationship between the main and subordinate clauses to express the complete idea.

Between the main clause and the subordinate clause there may be a link that joins both clauses; at other times there is not. Within the sentence, the subordinate clause can be at the beginning, middle or end of the sentence.

Depending on the type of relationship with the main clause, the subordinate clause can be substantive, adjective or adverbial.

The substantive subordinate clause complements the subject of the sentence, is preceded by a subordinate link or an infinitive verb, and can be replaced in the sentence by a noun or a demonstrative pronoun, such as “that”, “this” or “that”.

The subordinate adjective clause it fulfills the same functions of an adjective, qualifying, limiting or describing the noun. Thus, subordinate sentences of mode use links such as "as", "for", "which", when they do not have a link, they use a gerund verb. Those of time use links such as "when", "then", "as soon". Those of place use the nexus "where".

The adverbial subordinate clauses of mode, can be changed by the adverb thus.

Adverbial subordinate clauses of time can be changed to an adverb of time.

Adverbial subordinate clauses of place can be changed to adverbs here, there or there.

Examples of adverbial subordinate clauses:
