Spanish Classes / / July 04, 2021
According to the grammar rules of the Royal Spanish Academy, esdrújulas words are those that have the stressed syllable in the third to last syllable and always carry an accent (´). The words sobreesdrújulas are those that carry the prosodic accent in any syllable before the penultimate syllable and always carry an accent.
The exception to the rule for both the words esdrújulas and sobreesdrújulas, is that the adverbs ending in mind carry an accent in the same way as adjectives from which they have been formed.
Although adverbs ending in mind have two stressed syllables (prosodic accents without accents), the rule accentuation spelling says that if the noun has an accent, the word that is formed by joining the suffix mind will keep.
Therefore the words esdrújulas and sobreesdrújulas without accent or tilde, will be those adverbs that are formed by a noun that is not accentuated and the suffix mind.
