Long words

The longer words in the Spanish language, according to the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), they have between 13 and 23 letters. For example: electroencephalographer (23 letters) and sternocleidomastoid (22 letters).

In general, long words are technical terms, little used and difficult to pronounce. For example: circumstantially.

They are also usually compound words, that is, they join two or more terms. For example: unconstitutionality.

Long words and their definitions

According to the RAE, the 10 longest words in Spanish are the following:

1. Electroencephalographer. Person specialized in obtaining and interpreting electroencephalograms.
2. Sternocleidomastoid. Neck muscle. It extends from the clavicle and sternum to the mastoid process. It is used in head turns and bending movements.
3. Unconstitutionality. Unconstitutional quality. That goes against the constitution.

9. Otorhinolaryngology. Branch of pathology that deals with diseases of the larynx, nose and ear.
10. Electroencephalograph. Graphic recorder of the electrical discharges that are produced in the cerebral cortex.
