In Spanish, there are many words that contain the sequence U + vowel, although there are no words that begin in this way. For example: paraguas, pEUrto, cuis, olduo.
U is a closed vowel and, therefore, when combined with another vowel, it forms diphthong. Instead, it is mute in the syllables what- and what-, gue- and gui-; in these last two cases, it is only pronounced with the addition of the umlaut. For example: lingüística, lengEUcup.
