The observing storyteller limits himself to telling what he observes, in third person, without participating in the facts. For example: Tomás stacked the dishes on the counter, turned off the kitchen light, closed the door, and went straight to bed. The clock was already striking 2 am.

1. The bell that hung at the top of the door rang, like every time a new customer entered. The woman greeted with a smile and went straight to the shelf where the classic novels were located. While he was holding some folders with his left hand, with his right index finger he went through the books, one by one. At times, he tilted his head so that he could read his spine. He spent a long time there, taking out and flipping through several copies, until he decided on one. It was the second volume of In Search of Lost Timeby Marcel Proust. He paid the man who was smoking a pipe behind an old desk and went straight to the corner cafe. He ordered an espresso and read until the street lights came on.

2. As he adjusted his thick glasses, he walked straight to the last table in the library room. There was only one person sitting in that corner: a blonde girl, reading a thick anatomy book. The young man sat across from her and pulled out a stack of photocopies, which he began to read and underline with her black pencil. At times, he looked up from her to look at her. And by the way, she was spying on the clock that was right in front of her. Every so often, she wiped her sweat-soaked hands on her khaki pants. The scene was repeated for hours, over and over again, until the young woman collected her things and left. He saw her walk down the hall. Afterward, he leaned out the window to see her as he crossed the courtyard, out of sight of her.
3. The sandbox was his favorite game. So he had told his mother as they went hand in hand to the square that was two blocks from his house. When the hammocks passed, he released his mother's hand and, with a little red bucket in one hand and the rake in the other, she was running towards the rectangle in which several castles and volcanoes of sand. Her mother sat on the same bench as always and she began to sunbathe while she watched him without him noticing her.
4. At 5 am she opened her eyes. He put on his haircut, washed his face and teeth like every morning. Then he came downstairs and went straight to the kitchen to turn on the coffee pot. Shuffling his feet so as not to lose any slippers on the way, he went to pick up the journal that the young man left by his door every morning. He went straight to the International section and read each note carefully while sipping coffee. When it was 8 o'clock and she had the crossword practically ready, Dona Rosa went to the patio, looked for the hose and watered each one of his plants, while he removed the dry leaves or branches that had been strained between the branches because of the wind. When he had watered every last mallow, he went to his room, put on his dress with little white flowers, a pair of comfortable shoes, and went to the market.
5. She cut off the phone and headed for the kitchen. He put on his apron and began to cut the tomatoes that he had previously washed into small cubes. It was two hours before her sister, who lived on the other side of the country, would visit her. She tipped the board and dropped the cubes into a huge pot, into which she had previously poured olive oil. She added some seasonings and let the fire do the rest. She went to the refrigerator and pulled out a dumpling. After dividing it and turning it into long tubes, she was cutting them into small squares, which she then went through that little wood with grooves. She was leaving gnocchi by gnocchi on one side of the counter, which was full of flour so nothing would stick. This done, she uncapped a bottle of wine and, after pouring herself a generous glass, she carefully mixed what was left of those tomato cubes, until they took on the appearance of a sauce. She put the lid on the pot and went to her room to look for the gifts that she had bought days ago for her nephews. When she left all the packages arranged in a corner of the table, she sat on her sofa to wait for them.
