Verbs ending in -ger and -gir
Verbs ending in -ger belong to the second conjugation verbs (ending in -er). For example: proteger.
Verbs ending in -gir belong to the third conjugation verbs (since they end in -to go). For example:exiturn.
However, the endings -ger and -gir behave in a special way: their conjugation does not exactly match that of the model verbs (in this case, ‘fear’ and ‘depart’).
It is very common for some writing doubts to arise when the dilemma between 'g' and 'j' is raised, since there are only three verbs ending with the sound ‘/ g / er’ or ‘/ g / ir’ that are written with ‘jota’: ‘knit’, ‘crunch’ and ‘brujir’ and behave like regular verbs full. All the others with this sound end in '-ger' or '-gir' and conform to what is already indicated in terms of conjugation.

When the 'g' is placed before the letter 'e' or the letter 'i' it is pronounced as a 'j'. For example:
to protect. (Whereas when it is placed before the 'a', the 'o' or the 'u', it is pronounced as ge. For example: to turn off)These verbs are said to be from apparent irregularity: the 'g' is changed to a 'j' in the following cases:
Some of these verbs behave like true irregular verbs: such is the case of ‘choose’ or ‘rule, in which in addition to changing the‘ ge ’to the‘ jot ’, changes are produced in its root. For example, in the subjunctive: elija, rijto (the 'e' preceding the 'g' becomes 'i').
