    Spanish Classes   /   by admin   /   July 04, 2021

The tetrasyllable words are words that are made up of four syllables. Hence the origin of its name, since the prefix tetra- comes from greek τετρα- which means 'four'.

The syllables is it so formed by vowel and consonant sounds which are grouped as one phonetic unit that is pronounced with a single voice emission. Between each syllable, then, there is a slight pause in the pronunciation of the word. Although this pause may vary depending on the geographical area or the speaker. For example in the word tetrasyllable weasel four syllables are formed (co - ma - dre - ja).

A syllable it can be formed by a vowel or, by a vowel and a consonant or several vowels and consonants.

    Let's see an example:

    • Ethereal. Hyphenation: e - tea - re - o. This word tetrasyllable has syllables that are made up of a single vowel (e, o) or syllables that are composed by the union of vowels and consonants (tea, re).

It is also important to note in the example above that the hiatus eo separates in different syllables since they are two strong vowels, and the

sequence of two united strong vowels (a, e, o) it is always considered hiatus.

To analyze the hyphenation of a word you must take into account the hiatuses and diphthongs that are formed.
