Placement
The placements they are combinations of two words that, together, give a completely new meaning. They are often used to refer to an object or state of affairs. For example: give advice, vent a secret.
The placements are characteristic of a certain site or region so they can be completely devoid of meaning or coherence for a speaker from a foreign region. The collocations do not respond to fixed rules, since their use depends on the speakers of a given language.
The collocations express a meaning unequivocally, that is, they cannot be confused or replaced. In order to check this we can try to translate the collocations into another language: we will check that they completely lose their coherence.
It is important to differentiate the collocations of idiomatic expressions (for example the expression turn a blind eye or cut to the chase) since the difference is that the collocations individually add meaning to the overall idea, while idiomatic expressions lack the same global meaning if each component is taken by separated.
Finally, it is important to indicate that there are somewhat strange collocations and that they are only used in certain contexts or places, but there are others that are very frequently used. For example: say one thing.
