Prepositions

A preposition is a type of word that is used to establish a dependency relationship between other words. For this reason, prepositions by themselves do not make sense, since it arises from the elements of the sentence that they link together.

According to the relationship they establish, they are called prepositions of mode, of place, of movement (or direction) or of time.

Mode prepositions

1. With: (with). Ex. Will you go out with her on Friday?
2. Without: (without). Ex. John had agreed without argument.
3. Desde: (since). Eg the train desde London was very late.
4. Of: (from). It indicates a relationship of belonging. Ex. Did John think of her that way?
5. By: (by / for). It can indicate a close relationship between objects, or the way in which an action is performed. Ex. She was stunned by my beauty.
6. For: (in order to). The person or object to whom an action is directed. Ex. I've waited at that station for three hours.
7. In: (within). It can be a physical relationship (one object within another) or abstract (a person in a situation). Ex. I found my jacket in the closet.

8. About: (about / about). Ex. I asked Mike about his childhood of him.

Prepositions of place

1. On: (on, on, on top of). It is also used as a preposition of time. Ex. The cat is on the table.
2. Upon: More formal variant to express the same sense as on (above, above) but only as a preposition of place. Eg I have put the book upon the table.
3. At: (on). It is used both to indicate that something or someone is in common places (school, work), and for specific places and addresses. Also to refer to positions with respect to something else (on top, to the side, etc.). Ex. The title is at the top of the page.
4. In: (in, inside). It is used to indicate that something or someone is in a country, a city, a room. Ex. I am in Rome.
5. Inside: (within, in). The food is inside the oven.
6. Outside: (outside). Eg Being outside is not a good idea with Este weather.
7. Above: (above).
8. Below: (under). Without necessarily having contact. There are insects below you.
9. Over: (on). Without necessarily having contact.
10. Under: (below). The dog is under the table.
11. Beneath: (under). You can't breath beneath the surface.
12. By: (next to). Booth by me, you will be ok.
13. Near: (near). I live near Palo Alto, in San Francisco.
14. Across: (via, to the other side of). Ex. A slow smile worked its way across his face of her and into his eyes of her.
15. Next to: (after, next to). Eg Ella She was standing next to I.
16. Between: (Come in). Ex. This is between you and me, not the entire country.

1. Up: upwards
2. Down: down
3. Off: outside
4. To: toward
5. Desde: since
6. Towards: in direction to
7. Away from: moving away from
8. Through: via
9. Around: surrounding
