Questions Wh Questions
The wh questionshave a nucleus, which is a verb located after the adverb introductory whose first two letters are 'wh', and this verb will be conjugated in the corresponding time according to the situation to be referred to (present, past or future; real or hypothetical) and the corresponding person.
In the English language there are two kinds of interrogative sentence structures: those of 'closed question'And those of'open question’. What differentiates one from the other?
- Closed questions, the answer is dichotomous, In response they only expect a Yes or a not, eventually followed by justification or detail. For example, if you ask ‘Is this your hat?’ (Is this your hat?), You can only wait for an answer ‘Yes’ or ‘no’ (yes or no), since it is only inquiring about the true or false condition of the asked.
- Open questions, instead, cannot be answered with 'yes' or 'no', because in truth they are requesting more information. In English these questions are also known as'wh- questions', Since all the adverbs that introduce them begin with the letters'wh’.
Types of wh-questions
The basic 'wh' questions that show the direction of the information to be obtained are the following:
From these words new variants are opened, such as:
Finally, a single question appears that semantically belongs to the category of 'wh', but does not start with those characters: this is 'How', which means 'how'.
Also from ‘how’ other questions are derived such as ‘How much’ ('how much'), ‘How many’ ('how many'), ‘How often’ ('how often'), ‘How long’ ('how long'), ‘How late’ (‘How late’), ‘How long ago’ (‘How long ago’) or ‘How soon’ (‘How soon’).
