The closed questions are questions that one or more individuals ask someone else and that are formulated in such a way that the answer be specific. In closed questions, it is sought that the interlocutor responds in a certain way; there is a margin of answer that the questioner has already contemplated in advance. The questioner then waits for a certain answer or information that the other person possesses and asks a question that particularly inquires into what they are seeking to know. This is contrary to Open questions, where the questioner can freely choose what and how to ask the question.
The uses of closed questions are wide. In general, they are used to collect data or some specific information. Some uses of closed questions are as follows:
- In the school setting, to assess a student's knowledge on a specific topic. In particular, the knowledge of certain data is evaluated and not so much the capacity of reflection of the person.
- To obtain specific data from the interlocutor: a date, a place, a name, a time, a definition, an amount, etc.
- In any type of request, survey, form, questioning or document that seeks to obtain a particular data. For example: age, occupation, job performance, marital status, nationality, customs, etc.
- In oral interviews, closed questions are often used to obtain data that are useful to the interviewer to evaluate the person. Some examples are job interviews or oral exams.
- As a sales strategy, closed questions can be used to make the customer answer in a certain way and that his answer helps to make a sale.
There are different types of closed questions. The following stand out:
- The closed questions of yes or no. These types of questions are worded or formulated in such a way that the only possible answer that the interlocutor gives is an affirmation or a negation. For example: "Do you have credit or debit cards?", "Would you be interested in hiring a mobile plan that gives you great benefits?", "Are you a smoker", etc.
- Closed multiple-choice questions. They are used in the educational field generally as an evaluation strategy. It consists of asking a closed question and then listing a series of answers of which one or more are correct.
- The closed questions of scale. These types of closed questions are widely used in surveys. They consist of closed questions in which the answer is a gradation that goes from higher to lower intensity or vice versa; For example, the answers may be: always, almost always, sometimes, almost never, never; very satisfied, satisfied, not very satisfied, dissatisfied; etc.
