Esdrújulas Words with Hiatus and Diphthong
The esdrújulas words are those whose stressed syllable is the penultimate. Esdrújulas always have an accent. For example: mgor–co-les, mEUr–da-go.
Esdrújulas words can also contain diphthong, if there are two contiguous vowels in the same syllable (for example: mur-cié-lake) or hiatus, if there are two contiguous vowels but in different syllables (for example: theoretical).
Diphthong and hiatus
The diphthong it exists when two vowels join in the same syllable. This union can be: ai, ia, au, ua, ei, ie, eu, ue, oi, io, ou, uo, iu, ui. For example: nu-fra-go.
The hiatus, on the other hand, it produces when it is necessary to place an accent to separate the diphthong. This happens when there is an open vowel together with a stressed closed vowel, two open vowels, or the same repeated vowel. For example: ca-o-ti-co.
