The prefixneo-, of Greek origin, means "new" or "recent". This prefix is used to refer to movements, currents and periods that are new or have been resignified in some way. For example: neocolonialism, neoclassicism.
This prefix is opposed to prefix retro-, of origin in Latin, which means "ancient" or "old".
(!) Exceptions
There are words that begin with the syllables ne-o but that do not correspond to the use or meaning of the prefix neo-. For example:
