Homonyms
Homonyms are those terms that are spelled and pronounced the same, but have different meanings. They are also called polysemic words, since they have more than one meaning. For example: language (language) or language (organ of the mouth).
To identify which of all the meanings the word refers to, it is necessary to place it in a context. For example, if you hear the word "bank", you can think of a seat to sit in the square or in a financial institution.
Homonyms must be distinguished from homophones, which are words that sound the same but are written differently and have different meanings. For example: wave Y Hello; hunting Y home, one hundred Y temple.
Homonyms are also not equivalent to paronyms, which are words that sound and are written similarly, but have different meanings. For example: affected Y effect, absolve Y absorb.
