The simile or comparison is a rhetorical figure in which two terms or elements are compared so that some of their similarities are related. Like all rhetorical figures, the purpose of the simile is to make an aesthetic and figurative use of language, that is why it is very common to find this figure in poems and literary texts. For example:
- "Your eyes What two moons that illuminate the soul ”: a simile is established in which two terms are compared: your eyes + two moons that caress the soul
- “The rain fell like crystal tears on the field ”: in this sentence a simile is established between The rain and the comparison that is made with crystal tears. As we can see, it is a figurative language, since this phrase cannot be understood literally.
As we can see in the previous examples, the simile compares certain qualities that it attributes to any of the termsto create a poetic image. This is often symbolic; For example, in the first sentence the light of the moon or its brightness is compared to the brightness of a look; In the second example, the raindrops are compared to the shine of glass and the shape of a teardrop. In this way, the simile is used to highlight a negative or positive aspect or a characteristic of a subject, noun, entity, etc.
