    Prefix epi-

    The prefix epi-, of Greek origin, is used to indicate that something is above something else or above something. For example: epicenter, epidermia, episodium.

    Opposes prefix hiccup- which means “below” or “less than”.

    Examples of words with the prefix epi-

    1. Epicardium: Membrane that covers or surrounds the heart of vertebrate animals.
    2. Epicarp: Outer layer that have some fruits such as peaches.
    3. Epicene: Nouns that refer to both male and female gender.
    4. Epicenter: Point of the earth's surface that is located in the vertical of the focus of an earthquake.
    5. Epidemic: Disease spreads beyond normal.
    6. Epidermis: The most superficial layer of skin that covers the body of animals.
    7. Epigastrium: Upper abdomen.
    8. Epiglottis: Cartilage that is above the glottis.
    9. Epitaph: Inscription or writing that must be engraved on the tombstone of a grave.
    10. Epigraph: Statement that a photo is described.
    11. Epithelium: Tissue formed by flattened cells that line the body.
    12. Epinephrine: Name that, in the field of medicine, is given to adrenaline. It literally means that it acts on the kidney.

    14. Epigenome: Proteins that act on the genome and change the hereditary consequences.
    15. Episode: Intermission of a tragedy or a scene.
    16. Episcopal: Relative or belonging to the bishop.
    17. Epigram: Short text that is engraved on metal, stone or other hard element.

    (!) Exceptions

    Not all words that start with syllables epi- correspond to this prefix. These are some exceptions:

    • Epidermolysis: Hereditary disease characterized by the appearance of blisters, welts or hemorrhages on the hands, feet, knees and elbows of men.
    • Epiphany: That a thing manifests itself or appears.
    • Epiphysiolysis: Term used in medicine and means fracture of the growth plate of a long bone.
    • Epiphysis: Each of the flared ends of the long bones of the body.
    • Epigone: Person who follows a scientific, artistic or philosophical trend of a generation prior to his own.
    • Epilogue: Final part of a speech.
    • Epitome: Summary of an extensive work.
    • Epistemology: In this case the prefix would be episteme, it is associated with the knowledge, the to know and the science, while the suffix -lodge, (that comes from logos) refers to speech. Therefore, the word epistemology is not associated with the prefix epi- but refers to the part of philosophy that studies the principles and methods of human knowledge.
