The words with closed vowels are those that contain only the vowel sounds I and U. They are not abundant in Spanish, unlike words with open vowels. For instance: igloo, missile, useful.
The closed vowels, also known as weak vowels, are those that when pronounced are not needs a maximum opening of the mouth, but occurs in a minimum space between the tongue and the palate. They are opposed to the open vowels (A, E and O), also known as strong vowels, which are what we need a greater opening of the mouth, separating the tongue from the palate.
This classification between open and closed vowels It is important to separate words into syllables and to understand spelling rules of the diphthongs, triphthongs and hiatuses.
