Spanish Classes / / November 09, 2021
The Relative Pronouns are those pronouns that in addition to replacing a noun introducea subordinate clause (known as a relative clause or adjective clause); said subordinate clause will inform us something related to the noun or name to which it is linked.
Let's take a look at some examples of how these pronouns work within a sentence:
- "With hunger (antecedent) that (relative pronoun) I have right now (relative sentence), I could eat whatever”: the relative pronoun that has as its antecedent the noun hunger and enter the sentence I have right now.
- “She was a girl (antecedent) of the which (relative pronoun) had fallen madly in love (relative sentence) ”: the pronoun has as its antecedent the noun girl, and introduces a subordinate clause that refers to that noun
As we can see, then, the relative pronouns they function as a link between the subordinate clause and the noun they replace (known as antecedent). This antecedent is going to be the referent of the pronoun and, in addition, that of which the subordinate clause of relative speaks.
In addition to relative pronouns, other words that work to introduce relative sentences are adverbs Where, when, how, and the adjective whose, whose: "I liked the place Where do we meet"," That girl caught his attention whose hair was red”
