Narrative, descriptive, argumentative and expository paragraphs
The narrative paragraphs are those paragraphs that chronologically relate a succession of events or actions. The descriptive paragraphs are those in which the characteristics of something are stated. The argumentative paragraphs are those in which the author's point of view on a topic is expressed and justified. The expository paragraphs are those in which objective information about something is provided.
A paragraph is a unit of a text that is made up of one or more sentences, beginning with a capital letter and ending with a new paragraph. The texts are organized in such a way that each paragraph deals with a central idea. Generally, the first sentence of each paragraph tends to make explicit what the main point to be developed is.
There are different types of paragraphs, which vary depending on what information they convey, how it is transmitted, their purpose and the type of text in which they are found.
Examples of narrative, descriptive, argumentative and expository paragraphs
- Archaeologists, who were conducting excavations in Peru, found fossil remains of a dinosaur. Then they sent a sample of a bone to be analyzed to determine how old the fossil is. In addition, in the scientific community hypotheses were made about the characteristics of the animal and it was concluded that the dinosaur was herbivorous and that it measured approximately thirty meters. - It is necessary that there are laws that regulate the activities that intervene in a negative way in the global warming. Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth, it is irreversible in the short term and has very serious consequences, for example, the melting of glaciers and desertification. The activities that increase global warming are the production of electrical energy, the agricultural industry and polluting industries. It is not necessary to interrupt these activities, but it is necessary to elaborate laws that force them to be developed in a sustainable way, to reduce global warming. (argumentative paragraph)
- There are nine types of jasmine. The common jasmine has white, very small and highly scented flowers and is a shrub that does not grow well in cold climates. The false jasmine has flowers that can be lilac, blue or white and it adapts to different types of climate. Cape jasmine has white, highly scented flowers and grows in humid climates. Star jasmine has star-shaped white flowers and grows in sunny areas. Azores jasmine has star-shaped, highly scented white flowers and does not grow in cold areas. Jasmine nudiflorum has yellow, six-petal flowers that are odorless, and it grows in sunny climates. Royal jasmine has large, scented flowers and grows in a variety of climates. Climbing jasmine has small, white flowers and grows in moist, shady areas. Madagascar jasmine has white, highly scented flowers, which are larger than the flowers of other types of jasmine, and it grows in different types of climates. (expository paragraph)
- The sun rose, the scouts woke up, disarmed the camp, and began to walk. They knew that finding the lake was a difficult task, but they weren't going to give up. They walked five kilometers until Andrea excitedly told her companions that she was seeing the lake. They were all very happy and ran to shore. There they saw that there was an island in the center of the lake, where the treasure was supposed to be. (narrative paragraph)
- All labyrinths are characterized by having many paths that make it difficult to find the exit. The desert labyrinth is no exception, and it also has several traps. One of them is that the walls move as people go, making it easier to get lost. Another difficulty is that it has several mirrors that deceive people. It is believed to be one of the most complicated mazes in all of history. (descriptive paragraph)
- It is recommended that all people read. Reading is an activity that allows you to learn new things and other ways of thinking; reflect; improve social activities, spelling and writing; increase understanding, concentration and memory; awaken the imagination; relax and be entertained. In any case, it is better to read books that we find pleasant than to read out of obligation. (argumentative paragraph)
- Electric cars are those that run on electricity. The battery in this car is recharged with electrical current and when it is turned on, the current passes from the battery to the engine electrical, which transforms electrical energy into mechanical energy, causing the car to move when the throttle. (expository paragraph)
- The park that is in the center of the city was remodeled. First the benches were changed, then the games were fixed and finally grass was transplanted into the land. Many people participated in this remodel and the neighbors believe that it was a very important change. (narrative paragraph)
- What will the world be like in fifty years? It is believed that people will study fewer languages because they will use applications to translate texts and oral messages, that cities will have more spaces green books, that books will not cease to exist, that technology will advance a lot in various fields, such as artificial intelligence, that the economy and policy will not change much, that transport will be faster, that there will be more cures for different diseases and that the environment.
