The adversative links (or adversative conjunctions) have the function of uniting in the same statement two parts that are apparently opposite or are in opposite positions. For example: I studied for the exam However I couldn't pass.
The main sentence and the subordinate clause they are united by these links. In this way, the sentence acquires a particular meaning that indicates that, despite the differences in the content of the statement, both are coherent.
The adversative nexus can go in the middle of both sentences (main and secondary sentences) or it can go to the beginning of the first sentence. This will depend on each particular case.
