Drama
The drama It is one that is intended to be represented before an audience and that is written in dialogue format. For example: Hamlet (William Shakespeare), King Oedipus (Sophocles),The life is dream (Pedro Calderón de la Barca).
In this genre, which has its origins in Greece, all theatrical manifestations are included: comedy, tragedy, musical theater.
In dramatic texts there is no storyteller neither descriptions, but the episodes are represented by means of attitudes, gestures, dialogues Y monologues maintained by the characters. For this reason, different codes coexist in the same dramatic work: the verbal (word), the non-verbal (scenery, makeup, lights, music, lighting, sound) and the paraverbal (intonation, pauses, emphasis).
Every dramatic text has three elements:
Structure of dramatic texts
All dramatic text has the following structure:
- Presentation of the conflict. It occurs at the beginning of the play, when the opposite positions appear and the obstacle that prevents the protagonist from reaching his goal is made explicit.
- Nuduo or development of dramatic action. It is the moment of greatest tension, where the plot reaches the point of greatest conflict.
- Outcome of the conflict. It is the moment in which the conflict is resolved, so the obstacles that prevented the protagonist from achieving his objectives disappear.
Types of dramatic texts
Examples of tragedies
- Medeaby Euripides. Jason lives a series of adventures during the conquest of the Golden Fleece, a task that he had asked of his uncle Pelias. Having achieved this goal, he marries Medea and they have a son, whom they call Mermero.
- Othelloby William Shakespeare. Othello is a Moor in the service of the Republic of Venice who is involved in an intrigue as a result of his love for Desdemona, his wife. Iago, his ensign, is the one who drags the protagonist to bliss.
- Yermaby Federico García Lorca. Yerma embodies the tragedy of sterility, the frustrated maternal yearning. The absence of a son conveys the lack of love between the protagonist and her husband, a dispassionate man.
Examples of comedies
- Tartuffe or the impostorby Molière. Orgón, the protagonist, is under the influence of a false devotee, Tartuffe, who aspires to keep all his material goods, in addition to marrying his daughter. He is also dedicated to seducing Orgone's second wife, Elmira. Tartufo ends up being unmasked and goes to prison.
- Cloudsby Aristophanes. Strepsíades contracts numerous debts because of the expensive amusement of the son of Phidípides: the equestrian and the horses. Instead of paying his creditors, Strepsíades sends his son to learn the sophistical disciplines and arguments that will make her win the lawsuits against him, without having to settle her debts.
- The Trickster of Sevilleby Tirso de Molina. Juan Tenorio deceives every woman that he has within his reach, as well as his parents or suitors. One of his deceptions culminates in the death of the father of one of the maidens he deceives, who returns from the dead to take revenge and take him with him.
Examples of parts
- Doll's Houseby Henrik Ibsen. It is a reflection of how society and its impositions limit the development of its members. The work focuses on a family, whose stability is interrupted, exposing the hypocrisy immersed in it.
- The fallen fruitsby Luisa Josefina Hernández. After her divorce, Celia flees to Mexico City with her children and settles in the house that belonged to her parents to prevent her friend Francisco from declaring her love for him. He stays in the house that belonged to his parents. After rejecting the love proposal of his friend, he decides to sell everything, except that house, to die there.
- The cherry gardenby Antón Chejov. A Russian family is going through financial complications that could be solved with the sale of a farm, but they do not decide to start.
Examples of melodrama
- The lady of the dawnby Alejandro Casona. A family is devastated after the death of one of their daughters, Angelica. Her mother cannot overcome death until a pilgrim appears who will turn things around.
- The matchmakerby Fernando Rojas. The love affair between Melibea and Calisto is crossed by La Celestina: an old miser who does not want to share her income with Calisto's servants, which leads to her death. The love between the couple does not end well either: he dies and she commits suicide.
