Example of Explanatory Sentences
Spanish Classes / / November 13, 2021
Explanatory sentences are called a type of adjective sentence that explains something about some noun of prayer. They are adjective sentences because they work in a similar way to how an adjective works in a sentence: they tell us some quality or specify something of a noun. Adjective sentences are classified as explanatory and specific: if they specify something of the noun, they are called specific adjectives; if they explain something of the noun they are called explanatory adjectives
Because explanatory adjectival sentences are introduced by means of a relative, they are also called explanatory relative sentences. Relatives can be pronouns, adverbs or adjectives that serve to introduce subordinate clauses that depend on a main clause. Relatives in Spanish can be: what, what, who, whose, where, how and how much.
So, in summary, explanatory relative clauses or explanatory adjectival clauses are subordinate clauses that are introduced by means of a relative and explain something about the subject of the sentence or other nouns within the sentence, so they have a similar function to a adjective. Let's see some examples:
- The woman, who had been watching everything, got up to say his opinion.
- This cell phone, I just bought, it has many functions.
As we can see, in the previous examples the explanatory sentences (highlighted in bold) are subordinate since they depend on the main sentence. They are introduced by means of a relative (who and what respectively) and their function is to tell us information or quality about the subject. If we delete the explanatory sentence we do not alter the meaning of the main sentence.
In a broader sense, explanatory sentences are all those sentences that within their structure contain a syntactic element that works to give an explanation within it prayer.
Explanatory adjective sentences (or explanatory relative sentences) are not the only sentences in Spanish that contain another sentence whose function is to explain something. We also have the explanatory coordinate sentences; Unlike explanatory adjectives, in coordinates one sentence does not depend on the other, but both are equally independent and autonomous. One of the sentences explains the other and both are joined by means of an explanatory conjunction, as they can be: that is, that is, that is, rather, it is more. Let's see some examples:
- It is a euphemistic sentence, that is, it is said not in a direct way but in a way that is less harsh what is meant.
- It was something without antecedents, rather, a manifestation that was unique.
