Sayings in English, as in most languages, are more or less short sentences, which contain a teaching, warning or sentence.
Many of these sentences are expressed by means of metaphors, comparisons and other literary figures, which in synthetic (summarized) form, convey a teaching or warning.
In English they are called in several ways: proverb (proverb), saying (saying), adage (adage) or aphorism (aphorism).
Proverb, saying and adage are commonly reserved for what we commonly know as saying or saying, that is, to phrases that are commonly used and of popular origin. While aphorism, refers to what we know as an aphorism, quote or famous phrase, that is, those phrases that are known are from a well-known author or character.
