Example of Semicopulative Verbs
Spanish Classes / / November 13, 2021
Semicopulative verbs are verbs that are not quite copulatives but they have a similar use: can link to subject with a attribute and form a nominal predicate. The attribute will provide us with information about the subject (it can be about his characteristics or about some state in which he is).
A difference The important thing is that in copulative verbs (be be Y seem) the attribute can be substituted for the pronoun it, for example "I'm tired" (I am) or "we will be good friends" (we will be).
Whereas when the semicopulatives the attribute cannot be substitutedby the pronoun it. For example: “We remained unemployed” (cannot be replaced by we stayed it), “They were very interested in buying it” (it cannot be substituted for they showed it to him).
Some examples of semicopulative verbs are:
- Result: “Your contributions to the conversation they turned out (v. semicopulative) very interesting (attribute) "
- To be made: "The wait made (v. semicopulative) tedious (attribute) "
- To put on: “We got (v. semicopulative) euphoric by the news (attribute) "
- Stay: “We stayed (v. semicopulative) quiet (attribute) until he finished speaking (complement) "
- Become: "The cat turned (v. semicopulative) more sullen (attribute) since she became old (subordinate clause) "
- Walk: “Go (v. semicopulative) very embarrassed by what he did (attribute) "
- Follow: “¿are you still (v. semicopulative) throat sick (attribute)? "
- Appear: “At first, the children they were shown (v. semicopulative) reluctant to change (attribute) "
- Meet: “We were (v. semicopulative) a little hungry and tired (attribute) after the trip (complement) "
- Keep going: "The culprit of the crime keep going (v. semicopulative) loose (attribute) "
- Be: “The worker is finds (v. semicopulative) unwilling to do his job (attribute) "
- See: “We saw each other (v. semicopulative) involved (attribute) in a confusing situation (complement) ”
- Stay: "I I stayed (v. semicopulative) stunned (attribute) unable to move (subordinate clause) "
Difference between copulative and semicopulative verbs
In terms of their syntax, the difference with copulative verbs is that semicopulative verbs can be supplemented with an attribute, but do not require it as in the case of copulative verbs, so the tax can be omitted. If omitted, the semicopulative verb then expresses a full or full meaning. So, these semicopulative verbs can express a partial lexical meaning (such as copulatives) or well express a complete sense, which normally has to do with states, processes or movements, for example:
- Verb to stay as a semicopulative verb: “II stayed intrigued by his words ”(the verb links the subject me with the attribute intrigued).
- Verb to stay as a verb with full meaning: "I stayed and did not go to the cinema because I was late" (the verb in the full sense expresses the meaning of a permanence of a physical state).
- Verb continue as a semicopulative verb: “The client to be continue dissatisfied until you have an explanation ”(the verb links the subject the client with the attribute dissatisfied).
- Verb continue as a verb with full meaning: “The works on the avenue will continue still a week ”(the verb expresses a full meaning: a state that will remain).
- Verb see as a semicopulative verb: “My family It has been seen affected by defamation ”(the verb links the subject my family with the attribute affected).
- Verb see as a verb with full meaning: "I knowhe saw driving the car of his dreams ”(the verb expresses the sense of contemplation).
Another difference with copulatives is that semicopulative verbs add a type of aspectual informationto the verb. In other words, they generally refer to the state of things, how they remain or are maintained.
Let's see below examples of sentences with semicopulative verbs for a better understanding of how they work. The parts of the sentence are indicated in parentheses and the semicopulative verb is highlighted in each example:
