Example of Implicit Subject
Spanish Classes / / November 13, 2021
The implicit subject is the subject that it is not written in the sentence, but follows from the conjugation of the verb.
The implicit subject is also known as morphological, since it is deduced from the conjugation of the verb, it is also called tacit or elliptical subject.
In general, a complete sentence is made up of a subject and a predicate. The subject tells us who is being talked about. However, sentences with an implicit subject are sentences in which there is apparently only one predicate, such as the following:
- We will walk to the house.
- You're pretty.
- Saw the movie yesterday.
In these sentences a subject is not written. Despite this, they are complete sentences, since the conjugation of each verb has a number: singular or plural, and a person, who can be first (me or us), second (you or you) or third (he, she, they or they). Then, the implicit subject of the sentences that we put as an example, would be the following:
- (We) We will walk to the house (We will walk is conjugation in the future tense, in the first person plural)
- (You are pretty. (In this case, it is, it is a conjugation in the present tense of the verb to be, in the second person singular)
- (He or she) saw the movie yesterday. (The verb to see is conjugated in the past tense, in the third person singular).
The implicit subject can be made explicit when we add the pronoun that the verb conjugation suggests.
