The term comarca is a term used to designate a type of division politics less than that of a state. The region is normally understood as a relatively small region that has government or administration own but that, in general, is inserted in a higher political organization such as the state, province or country. The idea of a region is very characteristic of the Middle Ages in which much of Western Europe was organized in this way. Today these former regions are part of the state systems of each country.
The term comarca is always related to rural or sparsely urbanized spaces, that is, areas in which the primary activities are central and the population almost entirely devoted to them. The comarcas are also small regions that have their own organizational system, with resources relatively limited and a small population, which means that the links between the different members of a community are much deeper than those that exist among the inhabitants of cities.
Today there are few territories considered regions since the growth of large cities has fact that many of these territories end up disappearing due to the lack of employment opportunities and the migration of the population towards urban areas. However, many of them (existing in a high proportion in Western Europe, where the concept is original) continue to exist and are regarded as some of the most picturesque and traditional. In many cases, with regard to cultural and social issues, the regions tend to show a conservative spirit, distrustful of innovations and of entering into deep contact with the outside. However, they are also centers in which the identity local is very important and this also serves to configure the type of National identity.
