Conditional 3 example
English / / July 04, 2021
When we express two sentences in which one is the condition for the other to be fulfilled or carried out, we speak of a conditional. In English there are 4 types of conditionals that are classified with the numbers 0, 1, 2 and 3.
The conditional 3 or third conditional, is a conditional sentence that we use to talk about situations that do not occur in reality, which are hypothetical situations.
The basic structure of a conditional 3 is: conditional particle if, followed by a sentence in the perfect past tense (condition), a comma to separate the sentences, followed by a sentence with the modal verbs would or could (both are translated as "could, could") and a perfect present tense verb (Outcome). This last structure is also called the conditional perfect present:
If + condition (past perfect) +, + result (phrase with would or could + present perfect)
If I had won the race, we could have been into the podium.
If you had studied, you would have obtained a good job.
Negative form. The third conditional can also be expressed in negative sentences. To make the negative form, both sentences must be negative:
If We hadn't done our homework, we wouldn't have obtained a good note.
If we hadn't wake up early, we wouldn't have stay on time in the station.
Interrogative form. The third conditional is the conditional form that admits the interrogative form. It is the way that is used to talk about what would have happened if things had been different, what would have happened if what had not happened had happened. In this case, the sentence begins with the interrogative particle, followed by the result of the conditional, and finally the condition:
What would you have been if you had gone to the University?
Should you have spent all money if you had known you lost your work?
Sometimes the order of the sentences can also be reversed. In this case, the sentence of the result will be written first and then the condition, keeping the conditional particle. In this case, the comma between the sentences is eliminated:
I should have got a big car if I had earned a better salary.
We couldn’t have dinner outside if Harry hadn’t won that bonus.
