If a person gives up something because of some kind of pressure, a claudication occurs. On the other hand, if someone decides not to uphold their convictions for some reason, is also giving up.
In Spanish, the verb to give up is equivalent to others, such as surrender, give in, or compromise. In any case, if someone decides to give up, it means that he gives up, surrenders or renounces his ideas.
As for its etymological origin, it comes from the Latin verb claudicare, which originally meant to limp. It should be noted that in the language In medicine, the idea of claudication is used to express the paralysis of some limb caused by some painful pathology.
Different contexts of language in which the idea of giving up is used
All people have personal beliefs. Such beliefs serve as a guide for everyday behavior. In principle, no one is willing to renounce them and a surrender only occurs when an external cause forces it to do so. That external cause may be a threat or a psychological pressure.
In a sports match there are always two rivals, usually two people or two teams. When one of them understands that victory is impossible, he may be forced into surrender. This involves acknowledging defeat and awarding victory to the opponent. Something very similar happens in the confrontations between two armies, since the one who gives in assumes his defeat and the consequences that derive from it.
In the sphere politics, sometimes there is also a claudication. This occurs when a leader or a political party makes the decision not to run for elections or when a political formation avoids the confrontation of ideas with other formations.
Do not give up in the face of adversity
Faced with the problems that inevitably arise, there are two options: surrender or stand firm in one's own convictions. Imagine a medical student who dreams of one day becoming a doctor who alleviates the suffering of others. The desire for it may be firm, but it is very likely that on the way you will meet some obstacle: difficult subjects during the race, personal problems that make you think in a possible abandonment studies or any other setback.
These adverse situations act as a threat that could change your draft and lead him to abandon his dream. The medical student has another option when faced with problems: do not give up. Not giving up implies facing difficulties and resisting.
