When someone behaves with us in a vile way, low and with a lot contempt, or in his defect, when a person manifests himself in this way as a salient characteristic of his way of being and Act we usually call it mean.
For example, a colleague from the faculty with which she has been one of the most nice, sharing notes and books with her when she needed them, suddenly, we discovered that behind her she was commenting to the rest of the classmates that we did not want to lend her the notes the day she disease she missed. Such behavior could well be described as base. Maria was so mean to me that I think it's going to be very difficult for her to ever forgive her.
On the other hand, the word mean is also commonly used to account for the pettiness and avaricethat presents a person in a specific situation or as a salient characteristic of his way of being.
Juan is really very mean when it comes to gifts, in all these years of friendship he did not give me anything for my birthdays even though I have given him gifts every chance.
And also, the word mean is often used as synonym of the term small. The money That Maria pays me for the work I do for her is really mean, she doesn't agree with the amount of hours I invest to carry it out.
