Known as one of the seven capitals sins Along with anger, gluttony, lust, laziness, envy, greed and vanity, pride is a common characteristic to the human being that implies the constant and permanent self-praise that a person performs on herself. Pride is also a attitude of constant self-admiration that makes the person in question stop considering the rights and needs of those around him, considering them inferior and less important.
Pride is a characteristic trait of the human being since it has to do with the development of self-consciousness and of each individual as a unique entity and separate from the human being. environment in which it inhabits, a capacity that does not exist in the case of animals. The possibility that we have of recognizing ourselves as beings capable of many abilities, faculties and virtues is what leads to the existence of pride. Although pride can occur in all individuals at some point in their life in more or less profound ways, arrogance is spoken of specifically when a person's traits of vanity and self-praise become exaggerated.
Pride and pride
They are two similar concepts, but not exactly the same. While in the first the individual values himself in the right measure, in the second there is a disproportion. Therefore, whoever is proud is not proud of himself, but his self-worth is based on the contempt of others. In other words, this feeling produces a non-recognition of others.
From a psychological point of view it is a defense mechanism
The arrogant attitude is considered as a defense mechanism. In this way, the one who tends to be arrogant may be someone with a low self-esteem and to compensate for it he resorts to an overvaluation of himself. To camouflage fears and insecurities, a disguise of conceit and petulance is adopted. People with this trait convey to others that they are better and in some way superior, but deep down they love themselves little.
A proud person is someone with fear and who needs to feel above others.
The arrogant person may have difficulties in evaluating actions and normally lives pending appearances and comparison with those around him. At the same time, pride is a lack of modesty. Psychologists consider that to correct this attitude it is convenient to focus on personal self-esteem.
One of the seven deadly sins
In the tradition Christian the sin of pride is considered a dangerous deviation. It must be remembered that the Christian message emphasizes the virtue of humility and simplicity, two qualities radically contrary to pride. Because of this, to combat this sin, Christians maintain that humility must be fostered in the human spirit.
For the Christian, pride offends God and, at the same time, is the source of many other sins. For this reasonIt must be fought so that it does not grow in the soul. From this plane, whoever is conceited and arrogant is looking down on others and is distancing himself from God.
An evidence and reflection of the pitfalls of society and capitalism with which one lives
Today, postmodern societies are characterized by the existence of negative attitudes due to the importance given to individualism, to the notion of social and economic success as an exclusive consequence of individual achievements and not of achievements social or context, self-centeredness and many other circumstances that unleash high levels of arrogance and narcissism in thousands of individuals.
Nouns such as deification, pride, arrogance, arrogance or conceit are synonymous with arrogance. It can be summarized that pride is a feeling of overvaluation of oneself in relation to others.
