To circumvent this ban, clandestine nightclubs arose in France where young people could dance and listening to music normally and without the close surveillance of the German army that had occupied much of the country.
The name of the most famous venue of that time was "la discothèque" and it was located in Paris. Over the years, other similar venues were opened in different cities around the world and the word disco began to be used to refer to them in a generic way.
