This term comes from the Latin word filamentum, which literally means a set of threads. Therefore, any body or fabric that is formed by a grouping of joined yarns forms a filament.
The muscles of the human body
Our apparatus locomotive allows us to move and move. For this we use bones and muscles. The bones are hard and rigid and are attached to each other. Instead, the muscles are soft and flexible.
The various muscles, whether voluntary or involuntary, are made up of filaments. These fine structures allow for contraction and relaxation muscular. The muscle fibers that are attached to each other form filaments of protein.
In electricity
If we take a simple light bulb as a reference, this object is made up of threads or filaments inside. In this way, for a bulb to provide light, the following process is necessary:
1) activate the bulb with a switch and
2) the electric current reaches the copper or nickel filament and when heated emits visible radiation. Consequently, the visibility that a light bulb provides is produced by the action of its filaments.
Textile fibers
The different fabrics that we use to dress or decorate can have a natural or synthetic origin. In any case, it is necessary to use a set of threads or filaments. To make this possible, automated systems are currently used to spin fabrics. In some industry processes textile yarn is produced from the technique continuous filament.
In the universe
In the observation of the universe astronomers and cosmologists use the idea of filament to refer to structures floating in the form of a line and therefore speak of solar filaments, constellations or groups of galaxies. All these formations of the universe make up a compact accumulation. On the other hand, scientists also refer to the meshes of filaments that link the different galaxies.
By way of conclusion of the article
The term filament presents a general definition, as well as a particular explanation depending on the context of the language in which it is used. Something similar happens with other words, like substance, accident, shape, structure and many others.
