When we want to say thank you for a gift, a compliment, or just an indication or guidance, we give thanks. In English there are many ways to express gratitude.
The most direct and literal is using the word Thank and the personal pronoun you. It is the most common form and that is used in formal or informal situations, it is personal gratitude: Thank you, which means thanks to you, thanks to you, thanks to you:
This is for me? Thank you. - Is for me? Thanks.
Thank you for your greetings. - Thanks for your greetings.
Thank you for read me. - Thanks for reading me.
There is also a more informal way, which we use with people with whom we have confidence or closeness, in which the personal pronoun, simply Thanks, is omitted. Thanks is also used when the word gracias is part of a more complex sentence or we use indefinite pronouns. It is always plural:
You sent a skirt for my birthday? Thanks! - Did you send a skirt for my birthday? Thanks!
Thanks everyone to stay here today. - Thank you all for being here today.
Give him my thanks, please. - Thank him, please.
Other ways to say thank you in English, that is, to express our gratitude, is to use some phrases of appreciation or gratitude. These phrases can be combined with Thank you or thanks, or used by themselves:
You’re very kind. - You are / are very kind
You’re so nice - You are very cute.
I’m so grateful. - I am very grateful.
Thanks a lot - Thank you so much.
Thanks a million. - A million thanks.
I owe you! - I owe you one!
Dinners on me tonight - I'll buy dinner!
God bless you! - God bless you!
Thank Godness! - Thanks god!
I appreciate your gift. - I appreciate your gift.
You’re great! - You are great!
