Sentences With Nominal And Verbal Predicate
Spanish Classes / / November 29, 2021
The predicate is the part of the sentence that informs us about something related to the subject; the most important part of the predicate is the nucleus, which is a conjugated verb that agrees with the subject and informs us about what happens to said subject. The predicate core it can be a predicative verb or a copulative verb, depending on whether it is a verbal predicate or a nominal predicate respectively. The main differences between the two predicates are explained below.
Difference between verbal predicate and noun predicate
The two main types of predicate in Spanish are the nominal and the verbal. The difference lies in what type of verb they have as the core of the predicate.
1. The nominal predicate has as its nucleus a copulative verb (be be or seem); These verbs function as a link between the subject and an attribute that informs us about some information related to said subject. For instance:
- "Me I am very happy to be able to spend time with my family”: It is a nominal predicate because the nucleus is the copulative verb am that links the subject me with the attribute very happy for...
2. The verbal predicate, on the contrary, its nucleus is a predicative verb (all those verbs that are not copulative); These verbs will inform us about some action relative to the subject, unlike copulatives, predicative verbs express a complete meaning. For instance:
- "The artist sang his greatest hits at the concert”: It is a verbal predicate because the nucleus is the predicative verb singing, which refers to an action performed by the subject in the past tense (to sing).
